What is Capoeira

Capoeira is a unique Afro-Brazilian martial art that blends combat techniques, acrobatics, music, and dance into a dynamic and rhythmic game. It originated among enslaved Africans in Brazil as a form of cultural resistance and has evolved into a global art form that celebrates freedom, expression, and community.

FAQ

What if I have never done capoeira before?

Everyone has to start somewhere! We’ll teach you the basic movements, and you can progress at your own pace from there.

I’ve never taken any martial arts or dance classes. Can I still try capoeira?

Absolutely! Capoeira doesn’t require any previous experience in martial arts or dance. Everyone is welcome to try.

What if I’m not flexible or in great physical shape?

Don’t worry—capoeira is for everyone, regardless of age, size, or fitness level. The more you train, the faster you’ll see improvements.

How long does it take to learn capoeira?

Learning capoeira is like learning a new language. If you want to have basic conversations, you can pick it up in a month or two. If you want to dive deeper into complex “conversations” in capoeira, be prepared to invest more time.

What language are classes taught in?

Our classes are taught in English, Chinese, and Portuguese. Instructors speak English and Chinese, and students help with translations if needed. Movement names and songs are taught in Portuguese.

What should I wear?

For your first class, comfortable workout clothes are perfect. If you decide to join, we have uniforms available for purchase.

Should I bring anything?

Bring an open mind and a positive attitude! A water bottle is also recommended.

What’s the significance of the belt?

The belt in capoeira primarily holds your pants and also indicates your skill level. To earn a belt, you must train regularly and engage with the group’s activities. Our group has four main belts (green, yellow, blue, and white) with intermediate levels between them.

How long should I train before I’m eligible for a belt?

Generally, students who train 2-3 times per week for about a year can expect to be eligible for a promotion. The specific criteria for each belt will be explained during your training.

What is a Capoeira Batizado and who can participate?

A Capoeira Batizado (Baptism) is an annual event where students celebrate capoeira and advance to the next level. Our Mestre, Marcelo Caveirinha, and other high-level guests from overseas attend to conduct workshops and ceremonies. At the Batizado, you may receive a new belt, and it’s a public event with capoeira games, performances, and other Afro-Brazilian dances and music.

What is a Roda?

A Roda (pronounced [ˈʁodɐ]) is a circle formed by capoeiristas and musicians where the game of capoeira takes place. Two players enter the circle and perform according to the rhythm set by the instruments. The game ends when a musician with a berimbau signals it, or when another player interrupts to join in. The Roda embodies all aspects of capoeira, from martial techniques to acrobatics and cultural expression.

What is an Apelido?

An Apelido is a nickname given to capoeiristas, traditionally during their first Batizado. This practice originated when capoeira was illegal, and practitioners used nicknames to avoid identification. Apelidos often reflect physical traits, habits, skills, or other characteristics. Although no longer necessary for anonymity, the tradition continues in capoeira and Brazilian culture.

What is Mandinga?

In the world of capoeira, “Mandinga” goes beyond its literal translation of “magic” or “spell” in Brazilian Portuguese. In capoeira, Mandinga refers to the hidden power a player uses to disguise their true intentions and outwit their opponent. It’s like casting a spell to confuse or distract, making it difficult for the opponent to see what’s coming. Mandinga also describes a capoeirista who is highly expressive, embellishing their game with theatrical, dance-like movements, often imitating animals like monkeys, jaguars, or eagles.

Who founded Capoeira Mandinga?

Capoeira Mandinga was founded by Mestre Marcelo Pereira, who was born in São Paulo in 1959. He began learning capoeira on the streets and later trained under Mestre Suassuna, a co-founder of the “Associação de Capoeira Cordão de Ouro.” Mestre Marcelo earned his title under Mestre Suassuna and has been teaching capoeira for over 30 years. In 1984, he established his own school in Oakland, which became known as Capoeira Mandinga in 1995. Mestre Marcelo is also recognized for his contribution to the creation of the video game character Eddy Gordo in Tekken 3. Additionally, he founded The Capoeira Institute, a non-profit organization that promotes capoeira and Brazilian culture worldwide.
